Networking your Windows and Macintosh Computers

Mac OS X - Windows 98 and later Networking Information

Have you ever tried to adjust all the settings on a Windows 98 (or 95) computer and on a Macintosh OS X computer so they can file share between the two of them? I have had to do this several times and each time I do it I forget something. Here are the docs! I finally wrote down all the steps and then created screen pictures showing exactly what to set in order to connect the two computers.

This is my 19 page document in full color showing all the settings you should need to be able to connect to the Windows 98 from the Mac, and to connect to the OSX from the Windows. You can print it out or just follow the instructions from your screen. See below for other Win systems.

If you try to guess with the settings it could take you several hours. Here it is all in one document with lots of pictures and detailed text.

All I expect you are starting with is a Win 98*(see next paragraph) machine on ethernet and a MacOS X machine on ethernet. If you are also connected to the internet you should be behind a router. I will email you the file and you are on your way. The file is about 575 KB in pdf format. (half a floppy disk) If your email box cannot handle this size please email me before buying to work out another method of obtaining the file.

*Recently I had to set up an XP machine to work with Mac. I used this manual again and the descriptions in it helped me with the work. I have not updated the book at all for XP or others but the settings are similar and it should help you with the basics to get your system working if this is what you have.

What do you get when you are all set up? You will be able to log on to the Win machine from the Mac and log on the other way from the Win machine to your Mac. Share files, mp3 files, movies, pictures. You could even turn that old machine into a file server in your basement.

Try this when you are done. Run the Windows mp3 player and play music directly out of your iTunes music folder. Play Quicktime movies out of your Movies folder. It works both ways. Try running Limewire on Win with about 2000 searches. Let them download into a shared directory that you can access from the Mac. Lots of uses.
